Odisha is the first state in India to be formed on linguistic basis on 1st April, 1936. During pre-Independence era under British Rule, Odisha Postal was a part of Bengal presidency with headquarters at Calcutta (Now Kolkata) along with Bengal and Bihar. Up to 1911 Odisha Postal continued as part of combined Bihar and Odisha with it’s headquarter at Patna under the Post of Director, Posts & Telegraph. The post of Director, Posts & Telegraph Patna was upgraded to Postmaster General and one Additional Postmaster General post was created for Odisha on 20.11.1946 and functioned from its Head Quarter at Puri till 11.09.1949. With effect from 12.09.1949, Odisha became an independent Posts & Telegraphs with Head Quarter at Cuttack.
